While the flood was not as high this year, it has once again been a wild ride through the northern wilderness

Vumbura - During the flood the roads become streams and sometime deeper channels. We were lucky one morning to spot this male reedbuck leap out of the long grass to cross the road.
Vumbura - I love the contrast of the white, black and green. Summer game viewing is hard due to the dense greenery and rain at times however when you find animals there is a great satisfaction and young ones abound.
Vumbura - A lone male wildebeest stands guard in his territory. He will be waiting patiently for the females to appear and ready to chase any challengers off his turf.
Vumbura - Two males dancing in unison as they size each other up. Often the dance is all that is required for one to dominate the other. Occasionally evenly matched males will get into a necking match using their thick powerful necks to batter each other into submission. This particular dance ended soon after it began with both protagonists walking off.
Vumbura - A male African Migrant butterfly sucks up sap from a flower in a floodplain. The riot of colour was incredible with many different butterflies all vying for access to the plants.
Vumbura - A female Saddle-billed Stork with nesting material in her beak? Or maybe she was hunting for fish or frogs and got a beak full of grass instead? Who knows. I just love the colours of this bird and marvel at what led to them having such vivid colours on their beak.
Vumbura - One early morning we came across these three males chasing zebra through the floodplain. The zebra ran off and soon we heard the lowing of buffalo which caught the attention of these lions. By the time they had crossed the water and stalked close to the buffalo they were already struggling with the heat of the day. We eventually left them snoozing in the grass close to the buffalo, no doubt dreaming of the chase to come.
Vumbura - Find the lion in the grass. Amazing how such a large cat can disappear when it wants to. By this time the heat was taking its toll and these cats were more interested in finding shade than chasing buffalo.
Xigera - For seven years I have been trying to get a decent photo of this rare and elusive bird, the Pels Fishing Owl. Then one morning this particular bird decided to reward all those that had woken early by sitting in the tree next to the main area. A better display we could not have asked for!
